Southern Indian Province of the Congregation of the Mission

Tanzania Mission

The Congregation of the Mission was established in Tanzania in the year 1993 with the arrival of Fr. Chacko Panathara from the undivided Indian Province (22-09-1993) and Fr. Richard Kehoe from the Eastern Province of United States of America (23-09-1993). In the year 2001, the then Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Robert P Maloney and his councillors entrusted the future of the Tanzania Mission to the Southern Indian Province. In the year 2016, Tanzania Mission was raised to the status of a Region

Though we were invited by the Vincentian Sisters to work as their Chaplain, it was Bishop Emmanuel Mapunda, late Bishop of Mbinga Diocese, who welcomed us to his diocese and gave us Mpepai substation as the first centre of CM Fathers in Tanzania for the pastoral works.

TThe present Tanzania Region is the fruit of the initial hard work of many missionaries from various provinces, especially, the Southern Indian Province which took up the responsibility of its development in the year 2001. Since then the provincials of Southern Indian Province took much care in sending more missionaries to the Tanzania Mission and also to coordinate strategies for the overall development of the Mission. The main concern of the Province was to make Tanzania Mission self-sufficient in finance and personnel in a short period of time. Today the Region has become more vibrant with the hard work of native priests in collaboration with the missionary priests from Southern Indian Province. Today we are spread over eight dioceses of Tanzania with three canonically erected houses. The Region is growing fast with many vocations. Today it has 16 Priests, one Brother, nine Novices and 55 Seminarians from Tanzania itself.

The Mission Activities

Parish Ministry

In 1993 we began our Pastoral ministry by taking up Mpepai, the first mission centre in the diocese of Mbinga. Today we work in seven parishes and 65 substations in seven dioceses

Education Ministry

From the very beginning of our mission, our earlier missionaries realized the need of promoting education in order to develop the local communities with better education. The education ministry is given a prime place among our ministries in Tanzania. Today we have three secondary schools, three primary schools, three kindergarten and four hostels.

Spiritual Animation

Tanzania Region has dedicated fulltime service of two confreres as Chaplains to Vincentian Sisters Mbinga and Vincentian Sisters Mitundu. A few of our confreres also provide service as spiritual animators to a few Congregations of sisters

Social Works

In collaboration with other NGOs, the Region is able to respond effectively to the educational and medical needs of more than 1,500 students and to assist in providing the daily meal in nine government-run schools, repair government schools, create water facilities for the poor schools, organise micro credits for the families and run tailoring and carpentry training for the poor and school dropouts

Though our Mission was begun in the year 1993, we have grown faster in comparison to many other missions in Africa. It is because of the visionary approach and tireless works of our missionaries and native priests and their single-mindedness and unity irrespective of the nationality and culture. Of course, it is the blessings of the Almighty God who made our Region what it is today
