Saint Jeanne Antide Thouret

Virgin Memoria on 23 May

Biography

Saint Jeanne Antide Thouret was born in Sancey-le-Long, within the diocese of Besançon, on the 27th of November 1765. In 1787, she joined the Company of the Daughters of Charity, where she remained until 1793. In 1799, in Besançon, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity under the protection of Saint Vincent de Paul. She often reiterated that she derived the Rules of the Institute from his spirit. After founding various houses in France, she was summoned by the king in 1810 and began foundations in Naples. She passed away in Naples on the 24th of August 1826. She was beatified by Pope Pius XI on the 23rd of May 1926, and was canonized by the same Pontiff on the 1st of January 1934.

Lauds

Invitatory Antiphon: The Lord is the King of virgins: Come Let us adore Him.

Hymn

God's blessed Spirit moved his virgin saint

To wield strong weapons in a lifelong fight,

To make a lonely journey from the flesh,

That she might live unfettered in his sight.

She turned her face towards the cross of Christ,

And he himself prepared her as his bride;

She bore the Holy Spirit's timeless fruits

By which God's pledge of love is ratified.

Her life showed forth the kingdom of the Lord,

When humbly for his sake she dwelt apart,

To wait on him in silence with the poor,

The chaste of body and the clean of heart.

O Blessed Trinity, the virgins' crown,

They sing your praises with unending song,

Rejoicing in the hope you have fulfilled,

Lord God, unfailing strength of all the strong

Antiphon 1: Jeanne-Antide, faithful to the call of God, waited on his Providence.

Antiphon 2: God's wisdom sustained her in all her endeavors.

Antiphon 3: Jeanne-Antide was filled with courage and trusted in the Lord.

Scripture Reading

Galatians 6:14-18.

Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

Short Responsory

V. God was her help and he sustained her.

R. God was her help and he sustained her.

V. He gave her peace in the midst of difficulty.

R. God was her help and he sustained her.

V. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

R. God was her help and he sustained her.

Benedictus Antiphon: I sought the Lord and He revealed himself to me.

Intercessions

At the beginning of this new day let us, through the intercession of Jeanne-Antide,

pray for our needs and the needs of the world.

R. Lord, listen to our Prayer.

In a world that is often hostile to the values of Christ, we ask for strength to be faithful to his teachings. R.

Jeanne-Antide sought to serve God in the midst of political upheaval. We too pray

for those who live and work in difficult circumstances. R.

God gave Jeanne-Antide companions to work alongside her in the service of the poor. We pray that, in our day, many young women will hear the call to serve God. R.

We pray for the sisters of St. Jeanne-Antide that God will bless their works and

sustain them in her spirit. R.

Let us pray that this day will be filled with blessings as we strive to live in a spirit of

self-giving. R.

Concluding Prayer

Instill in us the flame of charity, O Lord,

with which You kindled the heart of Saint Jeanne Antide,

so that our humble work may keep aglow the fire of charity

which Your Son brought into the world.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

Hymn

O Jesus, thou the virgins' crown,

Thy gracious ear to us bow down,

Born of that Virgin whom alone

The Mother and the maid we own.

In thee, their Bridegroom and their Lord,

The virgins find their bright reward,

And wheresoe'r they footsteps wend

With hymns and praises thee attend.

O gracious Lord, we thee implore

Thy grace into our minds to pour;

From all defilement keep us free,

And make us pure in heart for thee.

All praise to God the Father be,

All praise, eternal Son, to thee,

With whom the Spirit we adore,

Forever and for evermore.

Antiphon 1: Blessed be God who has shown his love to his servant Jeanne-Antide.

Antiphon 2: Praise the Lord. He has blessed Jeanne-Antide with his love.

Antiphon 3: The Lord takes delight in Jeanne-Antide and rejoices over her.

Scripture Reading

Philippians 3:7-11.

Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith - that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Short Responsory

R. I will exult and rejoice in your merciful love.

R. I will exult and rejoice in your merciful love.

V. You led me in the paths of goodness.

R. I will exult and rejoice in your merciful love.

V. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

R. I will exult and rejoice in your merciful love.

Magnificat Antiphon: Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

Intercessions

Let us ask the Father to lead us to holiness through the intercession and example of

Jeanne-Antide.

R. Make us holy, as you are holy.

Strengthen the testimony of charity within Your Church throughout the world. R.

May humanity work toward creating a new world, aligning with legitimate aspirations for progress, justice, and peace. R.

Reveal the power of Your love to the poor, the sick, and the suffering; comfort them with Your presence. R.

Protect those consecrated who are serving their brothers and sisters, grant them to fulfill their mission in freedom and peace. R.

May our departed find bliss in the mercy of Christ at His coming. R.
