Jallipalayam is one of the remotest villages in the backward taluk of Hanur in Hoogyam Panchayat, at Chamarajanagar District. It is located about 60 kms south east of Hanur and 140 kms from Mysuru city. It is a mountainous area. The village is surrounded by dense forest on the south eastern border of Karnataka. This place had been neglected by the Government as it is in the border of Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Thus, the transportation and communication facilities had been poor and inadequate. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: The people of Jallipalayam are originally the migrants from the upper reaches of Mettur Dam, who arrived Jallipalayam during the construction of the Dam between1920 to 1930 as the rising water level submerged their villages. The displaced group landed in Jallipalayam village and got settled down by occupying the government land while having lost all their ancestoral property and belongings. SOCIO – ECONOMIC SITUATION: There are around 100 Catholic families in this village. Most of the people are landless labourers, mostly working in agriculture fields cultivating Maize, vegetables or Millets. Others work in stone quarries, risking their lives, as coolies. Generally, people get hardly 150 days work in a year. Moreover, the rainy season is unpredictable and irregular. Hence, very often the crop fails and the people have to face the loss of the expenditures as well as have to undergo their labour in vain. Therefore, most of them are very poor, illiterate and economically backward and live even now in huts with a very low standard of life. CHRISTIAN IMPACT: This Mission station had been pioneered by M.E.P. Missionaries from France. The great veteran missionaries like Fr. Chervier and Fr. Godest had ventured hard to bring up the Mission station taking into account of the whole round development of the people without any discrimination on the basis of religion. Due to their hard labour, Jallipalayam village has been developed considerably. Their evangelization works have been fruitfully continued till date by the succeeding Diocesan Priests of Mysore (i) through the Formal and Value based Education offered to the children in and around Jallipalayam village, (ii) Pastoral Care rendered to the Parishioners, and (iii) Social and Welfare Works and timely Awareness Programmes done to the public through the diocesan Social Service Society, especially through the women self-help groups. From 2017, the Mission Station is under the care of the Vincentians (Congregation of the Mission) who duly continue the effective pastoral works of its Pioneering Missionaries with greater commitment and responsibility. Pastorally, in the normal course, the parishioners are visited frequently, daily masses are offered, Sunday catechism classes are conducted and one-day retreat is conducted on every third Saturday. CONDITION OF THE FAMILIES: The people of Jallipalayam are very hard working. But due to the overall unemployment problem as well as the poor outcome from cultivation and underemployment, people try to eke out their living through risky jobs like, working in stone quarries. In fact, almost every family carries heavily a sad story of the memory of the loss of their beloved ones, especially the male members between 30 to 40 years old, due to the accidents in the quarries. On the other hand, many landless labourers who take up the job of cultivation for lease often risk not only their labour but also their investment which they procure through loan from moneylenders, normally for 24 to 36 percentage interest per year. If they get a good harvest, they would get their fruit of their labour as well as the sum to pay off the loan. But, if the crop fails or if the produce is below the expectation due to poor rain or natural calamities, then the cultivator has to undergo not only the loss of the labour of the entire family but also has to be under the burden of the loan. PILGRIMS OF HOPE: As hope has been the foundation of life, the Parishioners of St. Francis Xavier’s Church, Jallipalayam navigate their life struggles and challenges with staunch faith in God. Though they do not have the access to the cutting-edge facilities and the opportunity to be exposed to the state-of-the-art knowledge in cultivation, they are well aware and conscious of the need for educating their children. To this end, in order to facilitate the acceleration of progress in the state of affairs, the children, who study in our school till higher primary education (Tamil and Kannada medium), are helped daily and are monitored regularly through morning and evening tuition programme. Also, considering the prominent trend of English-medium education and the growing demand for the same, a special class for Basic English grammar and spoken English has been introduced every day. Together with this, children are trained for various kinds of sports as well as literary competitions conducted by the education department. Thus, as the children are cared and nurtured with a good basic foundation, they do go to other places for their higher educations and pursue well. Indeed, “hope does not disappoint” (Romans 5:5).
